The characteristics of broadcast news has a number of notable differences from its print counterpart.

Writing for the the visual medium of broadcast news requires different techniques. Notably, the addition of audio and moving pictures gives broadcast journalist a wave of new possibilities when reporting.

Sound bites and voiceovers are a common way to advance the story in broadcast news. Many times the video is edited around the interviews and sound bites that speak to the topic of the story.

On the video side, the visual side of news has expanded since the advent of broadcast news. Graphics are often used to help the audience understand the numerical side of the story. Lower thirds are another way that broadcast news organization feed information to their audience.

Another aspect of video packages is B-Roll. These are shots that help the audience to correlate what they are hearing with what they are seeing.

On a negative side, broadcast news has declined in recent years. Since the election of President Trump mainstream broadcast news has displayed extreme bias and constantly disputed his election to office.

The downfall of broadcast news is emotion. Often times the emotion and subject personalities of news anchors haunts their reporting. In print news the bias of reporters can more easily be discovered, not hidden underneath ties and slick TV personalities.
